
Is Your IBM Process Leaving Output on the Table?
When an injection blow molding process starts to drift, cycle times increase, or bottle quality becomes inconsistent, it’s tempting to start changing process parameters. Before you do, check the basics.
Verify water temperature and flow, air pressure, material condition, heater temperatures, mold cooling, and machine settings. Make sure the mold and core rods are properly set up and that mechanical components are functioning as intended. A surprisingly large number of processing problems can be traced back to one of these fundamentals.
Next, look at what the process is telling you. Are all cavities filling evenly? A short-shot test can quickly reveal whether material is being distributed consistently across the mold. Compare bottle weights and wall distribution cavity-to-cavity, and look for differences in cooling or preform temperature. Don’t overlook cycle time, either. Small delays in injection, cooling, mold movement, or part removal can add up to significant lost production over thousands of cycles.
